Jaleo- Al fresco Sangria

Jaleo
7271 Woodmont Ave
Bethesda, MD 20814-2959
(301) 913-0003

I have been to Jaleo in downtown DC, a couple of times.
The sangria has always been reasonably good, but the food has not been up to par.

Last week I went to the Bethesda location with 4 of my girlfriends.
We were greated very pleasantly by a spanish speaking waiter. We decided to sit outside. First order was booze, being that I was with my wine pals.
We ordered a pitcher of Sangria, wich is a Spanish version of punch with a kick, that our waiter brought right away along with a serving of bread.
We ordered about 6 different tapas. I had to had las croquetas, since my mother used to make them. These were very well done, my mom would be proud of Jaleo. We ordered squid in a olive sauce, and it was fresh and very nicely condimented. In fact my friend and I were so in love with its flavors that we wanted to order more, but we refrained. The Tortilla span~ola was also another special treat. Tortilla span~ola is just a omelette, but at Jaleos is just not any omelette. It was absolutely delicious, just a tad sweet and soft. The spanish cheeses were deliciously fresh and we even had an eggplant with sun dried tomatoes that was divine, and I am not a eggplant person.
We were stuffed by the time we left, but I surely got dessert to go. White chocolate mousse with a tad of rasberry syrup. Fab.
The service was friendly and very responsive.
The Bethesda, Md location is definitively the location to visit.
Jaleo is a great place to go with friends to have a nice night out.

Helix Lounge - Lets chill.

1430 Rhode Island Avenue, N.W.
Washington D.C. 20006
Local: 202-462-9001
I had seen the hotel that houses the Helix Lounge several times from the street.
There is a striking 6+ feet by 5+ feet painting on the very front of a man holding his briefcase on one hand facing the deep Blue sky and yet loosing his hat in the wind. Really there is nothing more memorable than that, other than the bright neon lighting at the front that gives it a Palm Beach feeling to it all.
For directions purposes the painting at front is a big eye catcher.
Well, I want to plan my friend's surprise birthday there. I called in weeks earlier and the VIP booth was going to set me back $500, the booth could not be guaranteed past 10, but they would have named their house martini after my friend. Like I really wanted that? Plus prior to 10 is a first come basis so why shell out $500 even though it goes toward your bill.
The place is literally like out an Austin Powers movie, in fact next time I should dress up as him with the crooked teeth and all. The place is entirely white with fluffy seating and mental home type wall that is vinyl padded homes. This hip place hosts a very hip urban crowd; the Paris Hilton's wanna bees of downtown Dc. A good looking crowd with a few token very good looking gay men in the scene.
The fairly dark ambiance features changes in light color every so often and at least in our area we had a nice secluded alcove that could be closed off with shear white curtains. The seating wasn't quite as comfortable as it appeared; in fact the only way to seat was to lounge, literally. So that almost put me to sleep.
Drinks were a bit wimpy, not with a very high content of alcohol that is, but they definitively have a nice selection of martinis.
Many of my friends ordered some appetizers and since I did not try any of them, I was told they were actually ok and when I arrived (see Rosa Mexicano) I saw some of their orders and they look quite appetizing. The waitress was extremely nice and definitively eye candy, and even though this wild group of 15 very crazy people kept her on her toes she kept a nice smile.
The main attraction to this place is the fact that you are able to have a conversation here. It is not a club, so you are not yelling to the person next to you. The music wasn't very loud, yet audible mind you, and it definitively did not muffle our conversations.
Definitively a place to go and "lounge"!
Our bills, ummmmm4 tabs put together approximately upper $300-400.
We drank a lot. I would definitively go back and chill here again.
My rating= for a lounge a 7.5, since the drinkie were to week and would have been treated like a celebrity. 8)

Mamma Lucia- Italian style pizza

Bethesda
4916 Elm Street
Bethesda, MD 20814

Check out their web site for their multiple locations
http://www.mammaluciarestaurants.com/

Mamma Lucia is definitively my favorite place to go have a home style (Italian style) pizza. None of the yucky too thick crust stuff, and none of over done toppings that leak oil from sid
This pizza is almost perfect. Yes, I said almost, because depending on the day, and who makes it, the pizza can go from 95% perfection to WOW.
I am picky when it comes to pizza. Growing up in Italy, definitive trained my palate to the original stuff.
I must say I can eat Pizza Hut if I am hungry, and I do like it. But if I want something special Mamma Lucia is the place to go. My roomie who is half Italian and grew up in the New York City area and whose favorite food is a well made pizza, Loves this place. After relocating from the NYC area she and I went on a quest on finding great pizza, one day hungry out of our minds we ate at a stand at a home Expo. It was glorious and since that day we have been hooked.
I must say I have visited all the stores of Mamma Lucia, and never incurring a bad experience. The stores in suburbs of Maryland tend to be a bit nicer in the decor and the food always formidable. Pizza is not just their only specialty, is my number one dish I prefer here, but I have tried their pasta and meat dishes and they are always delicious.
My frequent visit stores are the Bethesda Elm St location, which about a year ago expanded. Their pizza is definitively the best ones of all stores. For some reason is just thin enough and has the perfect amount of toppings. Delicious! This location has a large bar area with a vast choice of liquor. The area is equipped with nice big plasma TVs to watch the game at. During cool summer days, outside sitting is also offered.
The College Park location, my other frequent visited location, offers delicious pizza and is definitive larger than the Bethesda location. It is a 2 minute drive from Ikea, so perfect for those shopping days. Unfortunately they carry 2 types of wine, a red Luna Merlot and a white Luna Chardonnay. Nothing fancy but both wines are very adaptable to the Italian cuisine.
During lunch time the Bethesda and College park location are waiter less, so its a come in, order, sit chit chat and peel your eye for when the food comes out, so that you can go pick it up. In the evening this changes and the white cloth comes out at full force with an always friendly servers.
Overall rating= 9.25 (I wished they carry more wine choices at my favorite locations.) This is the place to take your family for a low key evening.

Paper Moon-

Get out your organ grinders and train your monkey cause if you're looking for a decor consisting of nothing but Italian stereotypes, you have to include this stable, dependable Georgetown joint on your list. The food is quite fresh and attention to detail is paid pretty consistently. My most fav dish is the insalata di pesce fresco. A delicious salad with fresh tossed grilled calamari. Better accompanied by a nice glass of wine of course. Come early on a warm spring day and snag a sidewalk table for some good food and people watching extraordinaire. even though is not located right off M street. If you're a night owl. once the dinner rush is over (11ish), they bring a dj out and let the crowd dance away all those carbs. Evening sightings include fashion divas excourted by bronzed muscle boys from their own private limos. tzt tz la vita e' bella.

Sequoia- Loving the views.

Situated on Washington Harbour, within the heart of Georgetown, this restaurant offers an impressibe contemporary clean cut interior. It offers delightful views of the Potomac River from its wall to wall windows. During the summer months, the outside area, wich also offers a bar, are packed with people (so arrive with plenty of time- no reservations are offered for the outside tables.) The restaurant serves New American cuisine. Their menu includes burgers, salads and sandwiches and a some seafood. Their Sunday brunch is quite exquisite and it offers very tasty mimosas, is is a delight specially during the summer when the outdoor patio is open. The service is a hit or miss, I have had time when the service is good and times when they totally forget about you. You must try the lobster bisque, it's to die for.

Located at the upper end of Dupont Circle. This hip restaurant has a modern decor, and fantastic lighting. Reconstructed from a row house it features a lower level with plenty of seating featuring huge sliding windows that are open during summer hours for al fresco dining feeling. Due to its busy style and vast clientele an upper floor for additional seating is also available.
Thai Chef has a good wide selection of Thai specialties, ranging from the scrumptious pad Thai to a wide assortment of sushi. For drinks I ordered the Thai iced tea, which is sweet and light. For starters I ordered Sunomono, a cucumber with sweet rice vinegar salad with raw octopus, shrimps and crab. Served in a Martini Cocktail glass, it contained tons of fresh seafood. My friends ordered these chicken wings filled with crab meat and they were not just adorable looking but also delicious.
For the main courses my friend had drunken noodles, which require a palate of iron, since this dish is "drenched" in firey spicey sauce. My Pad Thai connoisseur friend (since she never orders anything else) loved her dish so much, she ordered some to go. I on the other hand strickly stuck with their Sushi dinner deluxe, which is an large assorted array of sushi and rolls, ranging from tuna to eel. Their sushi rice is perfectly made, the right concistency with the right flavors compliment the fresh fish and the Wasabi is fresh and tingly. The sushi presentation is a fantastic mastered art by Thai Chef.
The restaurant also has a bar near the entrance, that provides happy hours and deliciously strong drinkies. Their wine menu is nothing to brag about but is decent enough to carry some great tasting wine. The dessert menu is quite small. Quite a disappointment after one of the best Thai meals I have encountered in DC. It is definitively a place to visit in Dupont with friends on a night out due to its hip atmosphere, reasonably priced food and a great start to strong drinks for the night to be.

Rosa Mexicano ......More Margarita??

575 Seventh St. NW,
Washington, DC 20004
Phone: 202-783-5522

The decour of Rosa Mexicano it's very unique, from the ceiling high, 10 feet long wall waterfall, that reflects the thousands cobalt blue tiles, to the elevated water pond in the main dining area. This place offers great evening views to the window seat (and yes there are many.) In fact it offers an open feeling by the sustantial use of 2 story sized windows that face the MCI center. If you love people watching, you should go on a MCI event night. You will be able to see limos and fans of all sort out on the street having a grand old time.
If you are going with a large party, you really need to make your reservations way in advance. We were 2 and I made my reservations 2 weeks ahead of time, there were only 2 time slots left.
The drinks are fabulous, if you like them fruity margaritas this is the place to go. But do keep in mind, they might be fruity yet quite potent. I have had their sangria ($28 per garafe) in the past and it was ok, but being a big sangria person I really was not impressed this time, in fact I can make a far better sangria with my mother's family recipe. I just thought it was too diluted and it was just Sangria wine on some fruit, not maceration to it, therefore lacked that nice fruit favour. Now, heir home made guacamole ($12)is a MUST, the waiter comes and makes it in front of you in a cute lava stone, he mashed the ingrdiends to your liking, and topped with cilantro. Its served with soft tortillas, witch are just quite ordinary and nice freshly made tortilla chips, a better choise. A couple of fairly spicy sauces are also brought out, one is green and the dark red one, the firey one is strong yet sweet.
We indulged in chicken flautas, wich were crunchy and filled with succulent meats.
For main dish we ordered Tablones with is boneless space ribs. These melt in your mouth like butter, they come undue on your fork without the need to use a knife.
Their portions are quite huge, so my companion and I shared the main entree, wich was accompanied by a bowl of delicious refried beans and a bowl of a bit insipid rice.
We could not stop there, we ordered the Mexican cheesecake to share, wich is doughtnut shaped and the center is filled with a delighful caramel sauce. The cheesecake per se had a rather interesting taste, sorta mascarponey yet plasticky. The cappucino was delightful, so I was told, I did notice a nice foam. Our bill was $108 with tax and tip.
The service was excellent even though he did dissapear at the begining to make the sangria. I got to practice my spanish and to teach my companion a few words.
My overall rating= 8
Definitively this a stylish place to take an out of towner, or a birthday celebration, definitively not the place for a hot date, since it can get kinda roudy, but I do think they need mariachis. 8)

Hamburger Mary's- Never EVER again!

Hamburger Mary's
1337-14TH Street N.W.
Tel (202) 232.7010

This restaurant was one of the first businesses to open in the revitalization of 14th ST. I have heard a lot about the burgers in this place and how gay friendly it was. So, I decided to go with a gay friend of mine. First off, this place is actually a garage; yes you read right, a garage. In the summer the garage door is opened up and it gives you an immediate outdoorsy feeling.
The restaurant looks like out of a bad 80s movies. Some horrid bright 80s colors that make the place look very non-clean. Upon entering the place was quite smoky, mainly due to the fact that the bar is up toward the entrance. The sitting area of the first floor consists of approximately of 4-6 booths and 2-3 tables, there is also an upstairs which unfortunately I did not visit. An eclectic array of 50's /80s posters sporadically adorn the walls. We were first sat at a regular table, but once our waitress came, she gave us the option to move to a booth. The waitress got our order and did not make any small talk whatsoever, and I am guessing there was no daily special since we were not given one. She took our drinks and food order. She reappeared quickly with our drinks which were fresh and properly carbonated. The artichoke dip was a bit too hot to be served, yet. In fact I believe I still might have lesions due to it. At first it was a bit watery, but as it cooled of it became thicker and it was quite delicious. Nothing to rave about, lets say if you have 5 minutes and the ingredients you can make this yourself. The tortillas chips served along were fresh and topped with nice shavings of Parmiggiano. The menu consists mostly of Hamburgers, with rather cute names such as the Blue boy burger. I myself had the Hawaiian burger witch is supposed to come with Teriyaki sauce. My friend had the mushroom burger.
My burger was medium done yet insipid and even thou it had a great appearance, it lacked of Teriyaki sauce and therefore flavor. The bun was actually fresh and taste great. The spicy fries were a bit soggy and I barely touched them. My friend burger with was meant to be well done was fairly pink, I would say it was a medium rare. She ate it anyway and she seemed ok with her food. She was also starving. The waitress showed up again with refills but did not ask if our order was ok or anything.
During our meal we were constantly bothered by these fruit flies that just not go away. We wondered where they came from and even one of them made it into the dip.
Our bill came to just about $30 w/out tip in a lovely red stiletto heel shoe.
My overall rating= a mere 2 and that is because the drinks were alright you can't mess up soda you know) I truly do not think I will be making an appearance back to this place in my life time or the next. This is the place to use when you are dumping your date.
