Grandville Moore's

1238 H St NE
(between N 12th St & N 13th St)
Washington, DC 20002

Set in an old veterinarean office that has been stripped to the bone and made into an establishment with tons of character. This ultra casual place is totally unpretancious. From the front is kind of hard to extablis h its location as there is no large sign out front other than a non lit sign on the window.
Perfect for a friends night out, GM offers a wide selection of beers. Beers not easily found at the local liquor store. Make sure that with those beers (notice how I plurilized) you order the frites with an array of dipping sauces....the truffled one is to die for.
The wait times can be a little offputting, but it's nothing to worry about, if you come on a weeknight at around 6 or 7 you should be fine. Plus there are always the bars (one upstairs and one downstairs). Additionally, if there is a wait, the guy at the door will take your telephone number and call you when they are ready. You do not have to stay within the premises, you can in fact wonder to a nearby watering hole and enjoy some brew there if you prefer.
The main attraction of the place are the mussels, please keep in mind mussels are better during the months that end with er, such as September - December. The mussels steamed in many sauces. My favorite is the moules bleu, or bleu mussels in a blue cheese sauce. Phenomenal when soaked up by bread.
All the other food, wich I have honeslty never had, I have been informed is delicious. If you are a true foodie this is a must try place for you.

Capital City Diner

1050 Bladensburg Rd NE
(between N K St & N Oates St)
Washington, DC 20002

(202) 396-3467
www.capitalcitydiner.com

Have you ever seen an actual old skool diner in the city? Well now you can!! You cannot help it, but love the nostalgic feeling of the "Classic American Diner" that is often characterized by glimmering stainless steel exterior --a feature unique to diner architecture. It's nice to see the prototypical "rail car" style diner circa 1930s adorn Bladensburg road in D.C. Classic!
The staff is extremely friendly and the service is quick and immaculate. I have been to several diners up in the New York, Jersey area and I always find that there is a certain sence of uncleanliness that can come across, well this place doesn't. This place is kept clean. The kitchen area is extremely busy as the pace of customers in an out this joint on a busy day is insane. This place can get packed, and this is an understatement. The cliente is eclectic, youg families, seniors and urbanites of the such.
Try hitting Sunday brunch a little bit earlier than expected or you will end up waiting for a little while. I am not saying hours as the service is very fast. All I am saying is, if you are hungry go early. The food is American diner style, burgers, fries, breakfast. A must have are the waffle fries. DELICIOUS!
There are many weekly specials featured on the menu, and needless to say the prices are to die for.

Ping Pong

Gallery Pl – Chinatown
900 7th St NW (b/t N I St & N Massachusetts Ave) Washington, DC 20001
www.pingpongdimsum.us/

This is no ordinary dim sum house. If you want to experience dim sum for dinner this is the place to go. The place is huge, elegant and bold, with notes of dark wood and smashingling contemporary. It is definitively an attractive establishment that does an excellent job of luring “innocent” urbinites into its premises. Needless to say the place is sexy, but loud as loud can get. The acoustics in this place are desperately aggravating. You can barely hear the person next to you or across from you. I felt like I needed a microphone in this place in order to converse with anyone. This is definitively not the place for a first date or a romantic date at all, as you won’t get any conversation done.
Another downfall is the lack of valet parking. It is one of the most obvious things I expect when you are in a location that is so overtrafficked and supposedly to an above than avarage stablishment. So, I highly recommend taking a cab in.
Reservations are merely a suggestion as we were seated approximately 1 hour or more after our reservation. So, if you are a timely person, expect to chill at the bar for a good while. (who knows if this is a sale scheme.)
I must say that even thoug the food is delicious, it cannot remotely compare to the authentic flavors of a dim sum house where the dim sum is brought to you in carts. Technically the idea behind Ping Pong is turning dim sum into tapas and overcharge for it. Additionally the portions are so small that I can guarantee you that by the end of the night you will be starving again.
Regarding the impressevely stocked bar. I must insist that we are not in NYC and that paying comparable NYC prices in Washington Dc is absurd, unless you are in one of the best restaurants in town, or you just don’t care to be robben blindly.
Now if you are into overspending, flashiness and loud places where you just want to look good and not really care about the conversation….this is the place for you.

Pho 75

1721 Wilson Blvd
Arlington, VA 22209
(703) 525-7355
One of the first Pho places in the area, has been in business for over 20 something years…and this is why…
The only thing sold here is Pho….the specialty is PHO, the menu is comprised of only PHO!
This is a no bullshit Pho place, PHO PHO PHO and nothing else, well drinks…(you have to drink right?)
The Pho is delivious and the service is prompt . Always packed this place creates lines..
Only negative its they do not have hot chili sauce.
Otherwise close to perfection.

Biergarten Haus

1355 H St NE
Washington, DC 20002
(202) 388-4053

Have you ever been to place where you feel you are in a different country? Well!!!! Welcome to Germany BABY!! The front bar is stunningly constructed with old mohogany that gives you an instantaneous feeling of being in a bar in a small town in Germany where you go get a couple pints. Now, there is more.... the outside patio is where the action is. A huge tent covers the main patio just in case of torrential rains, 'cause you know we have so many of those...*wink*...I think is more for keeping from the sun and not scorching while you are indeed enjoying that pint. Large screen TVs surround the walls and give you an opportunity to catch your favorite game at any time. The bier comes in different sizes... Up to a litre...well at least that is what I have. Their main specialties are german biers and the do offer a large variate of that.....and superb authentic German food and of course outstandingly thoughtful service!!!
Definitively a must visit!

Carmine's

425 7th St NW
Washington D.C., DC 20004
(202) 737-7770
Carmine is located walking distance of the Chinatown district. Beware that finding parking around there is just a monstrous disaster. Opt for the valet...The establishment is huge but a mere replica of a Maggianos for slightly more money (due to the location I guess).
The food...generic Americanized Italian lacking a certain flare a certain creativity...and a certain authenticity. Sorry, but having lived in Italy for many years has made me a picky eater when it comes to Italian cuisine.
The calamari were just way too overcooked and squid size was miniscule....Maybe it should be called baby calamari.
The food is good, don't get me wrong and it's served family style and you cannot beat the humongous portions. Great for a large group that likes to share.
Their house wines are a delish, made directly from the family vineyard.
The service was quite attentive, as they kept my glass quite filled...*wink*

Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar

Located in an upcoming neighborhood, this place is a little diamond in the rough. I have been a couple times here now and I must say this place is fun fun fun. This place is tricky as from the outside it looks just like another row house...but it sports two huge levels and a huge patio. Attracting neighborhood urbinites of different backgrounds, this place has lots to offer. The bartenders are extremely friendly. The music is always hopping and the bar has a wide selection of beers that will make your eyes pop! Beware though is cash only, but an atm is conveniently located in the premises.

HomeMade Pizza Co

1522 14th St NW
Washington, DC 20005
(202) 588-0808

To me ...the idea is almost unheard of...why would you go anywhere and order a raw pizza? I guess the urbanites need to feel like they are actually doing some cooking. This place prepares it and gives you the info on how to bake it. Can we really call this homemade? Come on now...its like getting something from the frozen section and slapping it in the oven and serving it as homemade. Really ?? I would immagine anyone would just walk to Whole Foods and get a "homemade" pizza there. The distance is about the same. You must be a pretty busy person to go for this, and if you are that busy you are probably better off ordering an already cooked pizza. As far as flavor goes? The pizza is superior than a frozen pie, but not as good as an actual pizza place (we are not talking pizza hut or Dominos)...and definitively not worth your buck.
Honestly this place is overrated and I am just quite shocked on how they are still in business.
Do yourself a favor, pick up something from Pizza Paradiso's!!

Pazo Restaurant

1425 Aliceanna St
Baltimore, MD 21231
(410) 534-7296

Located in a old warehouse that has been lavisly revamped into a huge Spanish style hacienda. The ceilings are lofty and adorned with voluptious Spanish chandeliers. The first floor has several half moon low back plushy seatings, graciously inspired by a Mediterranean flare. This place is creatively pleasing to the eyes in more way than you can immagine. Well how so? Well, this is where Baltimore good looking list frequent to quench their thirst, savoring those perfectly concocted coktails that will land you straight on the floor. Professionals from around the city tend to gravitate to the allure and sexiness of Pazo.
The bar offers some of the largest most thought out cocktail list in the city, with a tad of appeal for just about anyone. The bartenders aim to please and will mix whatever concoction your mind might immagine. It is unreservedly exciting to be in a well conceived atmosphere that serves to an unambigious duality, and that is to serve some phenomenal Mediterranean/ Spanish Fare and attrack the sexiest in the city to hop to some beat thumping music on the weekends.
My last visit's experience was superb!
I must point out the lighly battered eggplant (and I am not an eggplant person lover, whatsoever), deliciously crispy on the outside and a pleasantly surpprising soft inside, the eggplant practicaly melts aways in your mouth giving your taste buds an orgasmic experience ( I am talking about eggplant!). Next is the ceviche with Jicama wich is just formidable, deliciously sinful. I have had plenty ceviche in my lifetime and this one tops them all. It is just so light and summery. Generally speaking ceviche tends to be overly lemony, this one as is paired with the Jicama escapes such fault. The wood grilled lamb chop I must admit is a big tease, melts in your mouth and leaves you high and dry wishing for more. To top my experience is most definitively the best dish I had that night and that is the lamb sausage ravioli, perfectly lightly cooked and sprinkled with a delicious light sauce.
Overall the food here at Pazo is confortably Mediterranean with meticulous thought to detail in every aspect, from techniche to presentation. It leaves you desiring for more or to try more, but essentially satisfying the most complex Mediterranean palates out there.

Pollo Campero

1355 E. University Blvd
Takoma Park, MD 20912
(301) 408-0555

Probably one of the best latin chicky you will ever have.
I first heard of Campero from a Salvadorenan friend who always commented of the many latinos bringing into the airplanes ridiculous amounts of chicken on board and having the plane smell like the chicken.
Well, when the first campero opened close to 7 Corners VA, (where there is a high population of latinos), the lines were so long for weeks that I waited a couple of months to go and check the place out.
At last I was hooked!!
I must say Popeyes, KFC do not compare.
It is definitively better if eaten hot in the establishment!!

Ethiopic Restaurant

401 H St N E
Washington, DC 20002
(202) 675-2066

Category: Ethiopian
Neighborhood: H Street Corridor/Atlas District/Near Northeast

11/19/2010 2 Check-ins Here
This is the first and only Ethiopian restaurant on the H st corridor.
The place is very airy and tastefully decorated. A large bar sits at the end of the main dining room, where any "poison" of your liking could be put together. They also offer a great selection of Ethiopian beers (that can be quite potent).
The service is phenomenal, I love it when the waiter has a great smile and is friendly and knowledgiable of what they serve and make adequate recommendations on what you like and not on what they like.
Beware!!! Ethiopian food can be quite spicy (something I love), you can let your waiter/ress know of how much heat you can handle.
As they just recently opened and they do not have an appetizer list yet, they serve a lovely aromatic bread with some lovely dipey spicey olive oil on the house. For dinner my friend and I ordered the Awaze tibs, wich is mandatory (at least for me) to have it with as much hot spice as my body can handle. We also shared the vegetarian platter for one. Needless to say the portions are huge, we could have fed at least four people with our food. I have visited many Ethiopian places in DC and the one and only in Baltimore and I must say this is one of the best ones I have been so far.
The meat from the tibs was chunky and flavorfull, none of the ultra mushy shredded beef stuff that can be served in other places. The vegetarian platter was an array of lentils, collard greens, tomatoe salad and a few other wonderfully flavored vegetables. A nice bottle of Tej, Ethiophian honey wine is also imperative.
For desert we were greated with a lovely flan on the house...I mean extremely nice of them and exquisite!! Almost as good as my mother's.
I read a review on here about this place not being really for children, just because they opted to leave their kids behind and wanted quiet time. Given the right time, families come here as well a young couples out on a lovely date. It is a very mix ambiance, and that is one of the great things that make this place appealing. Night out or family dinner...it doesn't matter, this place is great!

An Loi

7104 Minstrel Way
Columbia, MD 21045
(410) 381-3188

Craving a nice bowl of Pho? If in the area, An Loi is your place to go. Lunch time is extremely packed, but the line moves fast and steady. I have never had a wait, even though the place is always hopping.
The service is friendly and ultra fast. You will have your bowl of pho served within 5 minutes of your order guaranteed. The space is ample and very minimalistic, table chairs and the various pho accompaniaments. Nothing fancy.
The pho is always fresh and made in premises, served with fresh basil, jalapeno and bean sprouts. Its deliciously savory sweet flavours will warm you up on a cold winter day or release the heat of a hot summer day. The noodles and meat are always abundant and not a scavanger hunt as in other pho places.
Pho is not the only thing served here, an array of lovely Vietnamese entrees and appetizers are in order at An Loi. Furthermore you can accompany your lunch or dinner with a great selection of asian beers and rice wines.

RA sushi Bar

1390 Lancaster St
Baltimore, MD 21231
(410) 522-3200

I dig this place for a night out with the girls, but I must be honest, it’s is severely overpriced sushi in a great location that attracts sexy urbinites (who are obviously willing to pay out exhorbitant prices). If you are wondering where the good looking people go to eat in Baltimore, you just found it. If you want to have the feeling of being in a NYC club with loud techno music playing in the background, while eating creative sushi rolls, this is the place for you. What you pay for here is: 1. Eye candy 2. Creative sushi.
Service can be off and on, I have had attentive service some times and very absent service other times, so your luck will dictate how fast and how properly you get service. Overall the waitresses are fun people here.
My suggestion for the night: first don’t waste your time and run for the valet as street parking is nearly impossible to find, second order a sexy drink and then share sushi with a partner. Oh and do not forget to look pretty sexy while eating it.
If you go Thursday thru Saturday I can guarantee you sexiness exploding wall to wall.

Woodberry Kitchen

2010 Clipper Park Rd
Baltimore, MD 21211
(410) 464-8000

Woodberry kitchen is named after the little neighborhood that is set in.
It's not the easiest place to get to (at least from 83), it's not right off the highway, but once you are there you realized you have just hit jackpot.
WK is located in a little piece of Baltimorean Oasis. The immediate neigborhood is based on industrial style lofts (the Roman/Pompei ruins style pool is to die for), high end artist shops and enviromentally sane duplexes.
Valet is available, and I would recommend using it.
I have been at WK at lunch/brunch and dinner time. I must say my favorite time has been brunch time and preferably to sit outside. Hands down WK will provide you with a marvelous experience no matter the time of the day. Their baked goods are home made and delicious. Furthermore everything in the menu is locally grown or fair trade imported. The cocktails during my evening visits are methodically thought after, almost as if the bartender holds a chemestry degree. The concoctions are just innovative and brilliant to say the very least. Chef and owner Spike is a "granola" type genius who had an epyfany when he constructed this place from idea to reality. Everything is well thought after with a feel of closeness to nature that surrounds your every sence, from your palate to your sight.
My favorite meal ever was this oven baked omelet type dish that is served during brunch time. It's just delicious and a totally different take on eggs that will blow away your mind. Honesly, I am dying to meet Spike, he has come up with a really great concept of earthyness and flavors in a phenomenal location.

Donna's

5100 Falls Rd
Baltimore, MD 21210
(410) 532-7611

I frequently go to the Cross Keys Location. The place is contemporary and has a great outdoor patio.
Donna's has become one of my favorite places, not just because of the vicinity to my house, but because the food is always phenomenal.
It is great to have a good home made meal that wont make a hole in the wallet, but yet it taste like Giada De Laurentis slaved for hours in the kitchen. From the home made personal pizza to the burgers to the abondandly beautiful seafood dishes.
The serviuce is always friendly at this location, I even had the chance to meet Donna's here who is an exquisitively sweet woman that will take the time to talk to the true food fans (hehhe)
Donna offers cooking classes on Wenesday at their Columbia location. Something I have been meaning to get into as I would like to replicate some of these delicious dishes.

Il piccolo angolo

621 Hudson St
New York, NY 10014
(212) 229-9177

If you want to have the best Italian meal outside of Italy and not in my mamma's kitchen, then a visit to il piccolo Angolo (little corner) is a must.
After travelling to NYC many many times and trying all sort of Italian restaurants in the city, including in little Italy and Arthur Ave, I felt short of finding that special gem that would bring me miles away and back home.
I was thankfully introduced to Il piccolo angolo by my cousin who had found this place thru client meetings and friends. Upon my first visit she insisted we dined here, so I could tell her if this place was truly authentic or she was just dream it. I tell you this, I lived 12 years in Italy and my mamma, who is an esemplary chef, only cooks authentic Italian food, this place is just like my mamma's cooking.
I was floored!! Happy yet nostalgic for my mamma's food (my parents have now moved thousand of miles away). Everything is made in the premises, including pastas and tomatoe sauces. I usually order the Lobster Canneloni with the Vodka sauce, DIVINE! From other people's experiences, other dishes are equally phenomenal. In fact each and every one of the people I have brought here has come back again and again, with me or by themsevels bringing in a new era of followers.
Since the place (10-15 tables max) is small and demand is high I recommend calling a few days before your visit to make reservations. I assure you, you will be extremely satisfied with the attentic/friendly service as it is as impeccable as the food. You will soon fall in love with the cozyness and the beauty of true Italian flavors that will keep you coming back for years to come. I for one have made this my permanent pit stop while in the city.
Renato the owner is truly an amazing chef/business owner!!...and of course host!

Vintage Tavern

1900 Governors Pointe Dr
Suffolk, VA 23436

(757) 238-8808
www.vintagetavernvirginia.com

I love good food, I should say I love outstanding food. While travelling down to VA Beach this summer I was intrigued to hear Virginia Tavern was voted one of the top 50 restaurants in the country...so I made it my quest to go visit.
Vintage tavern is nested in a nicely secluded neighborhood of Suffolk, southern Virginia. Surrounded by lovely estate and small family owned foodie shops (right accross the streets on Saturdays is the fresh market). From the outside the place doesnt say much, I mean is not a hole in the hole or a warehouse, its a nice house looking like building. It blends nicely with the green surroundings of the location.
The interior is dimmly lit, and it gives a feeling of an Alp ski chalet. Lots of wood, lots of natural colors, and lovely live flowers spread throught the place. Indeed a lovely touch of southern elegance.
The service is exceptional, the manager came and checked of us possibly three times.
For starters, this people really do aim to please.
For drinks I explained to our waiter the cocktail that my companion wanted, something we had seen on the food channel and obviously not on the menu. He assured it could be made....and I assure you upon receipt of the cocktail, they had done a perfect job into bringing my recipe to life. I on the other hand ordered a martini with Hendricks gin, served with bacon stuffed olives (stuffed at home...perfect).
The martini had a little of ice floaties, I know I am picky, but something I ought to mention that even with the floaties, the martini was EXCELLENT!!
We ordered the Southern sampler....a delicious array of homemade marmelade...just like my mom use to make (even though she is not from the south) home made buscuits, home made deviled eggs...local sausage and local Virginia ham, from a neighboring family's farm. I love how everything is home made, everything simple and everything just a dance to my taste budds.
For entrees I had a massive Bison filet. Cooked to perfection!! I like things rare, well it was not mooing, but it was surely cooked with an attractive rareness to the middle. My entree was definitively from the south, but I tell you this, I thought I had had the best piece of meat ever in England, but this one battle that place head to head. Bison sometimes tends to be a gamey in flavored...well this one did not have a slight hint of gameyness..
My companion, a true southerner from the heart of Missisipi (accent and all, you all)had a southern Jambalaya sorta dish...lovely humongous praws delightfully condimented on a bed of savory rice. She was extremely pleased with her choice.
Additionally she was very impressed with the truly authentic corn bread (wich I learned is supposed to be non sweet) and with the onion bread pudding.
Overall this place is a delight.
Truly one of a kind.
If you like good food a trip to Vintage Tavern is definitively worth it.

Pizza Johns

113 Back River Neck Rd
Essex, MD 21221

(410) 687-7733

Pizza Johns, even if located in a the hood, has become my favorite pizza place here in the Baltimore area. In fact I travel 15 minutes in and 15 minutes back just to get me some good pizza. This place is one of the most authentic places around the area. None of the yucky too thick crust stuff, and none of over done toppings that leak oil from side. They even offer a do it yourself package, where you buy the crust and some of the toppings for you to make at home.
I have tried such package and it taste just like the one in the store.
It doesnt matter when you go, the pizza is always perfect.
as my "invisible" readers know, I am picky when it comes to pizza. Growing up in Italy, definitive trained my palate to the original stuff.
I have not had Pizza hut in years, I am not that desperate...even though I must say if I am in the mood I might eat it.
Unfortunately, this is the only location, I wish there was one by me.
The restaurant per se its very nice, family style ambiance, well lit, very clean.
The service is friendly and on top of things.
A good selection of Italian wines is available for purchase to acompany your pizza.
Overall rating= 10.
This is the place to take your family for a low key evening.

Gibby's seafood

Towson, MD

Gibby's is a nice little seafood merchant. They carry pretty much a little bit of everything, from the giant crabb legs to the deviled eggs.

This little place is not to be underestimated.

They food is extremely savory. They make everything in house, including their soups and deviled eggs.

I usually order steamed crabs to go. They even provide you with the thick heavy duty paper for free.

Their prices are extremely competitive and they are located right next to a wine store....what more convenient than that?

Blue Sea Grill

614 Water StreetBaltimore, MD 21202
(410) 837-7300
So this place has been closed down since I last went to it. Here is probably why.
This place is hip and sexy, total eye candy, but that is pretty much all it is.
The place is gourgous, it gives the impression of being under water with an appeal of a NYC extablisment.
The service was phenomenal, the waitress on top of everything, extremely attentive.
The only problem was the food, it did not came remotely to par with the aura of the place.
We were three and order 3 appetizers and 3 entrees....of all the food only one I would consider delicious, all the other food was overthought and the flavors just too complicated that created an array of messy notes. For the one entree we like, we complimented the chef, who came out to greet us. Nice Italian guy, wich whom I bonded a little since I grew up in Italy, but I was quite disturbed his culinary grills were not quite at par.
The cocktails were perfect! Gotta love a bartender that puts together a mean dirty martini James Bond style.
Honestly if you are a foodie, I would not waste my time and money on this place. I was highly dissapointed!!
If the food sucks, you are going down.

Kyodai - Rotatin sushi bar

If you are hungry and you need to be fed immediately, this is the place to go.
Kyodai is what I consider as instant gratification.
Is like a MacDonalds for Sushi, in and out we go. Except with way nicer food choices (unless you are a burgerphile)
Kyodai is the only rotating sushi bar in Baltimore, and it is perfect for people that want to try something new by looking at it first and pulling it off the conveyor belt.
Yes I said conveyor belt!! The way it works is you sit down at the counter and sushi plates are transported on conveyor belts around the table to multiple people.
Put this way, is like picking up your luggage at the airport.
Different color plates mean different prices.

The sushi is decent, but nothing extraordinary. I noticed that the choices on the conveyor belts is mostly rolls, nice rolls, but still rolls. Crab rolls, spicy tuna roll, rainbow rolls, salmon roll, tempural roll, california roll, cucumber roll... ok you get the point. The good thing is that you can also order lets say inari roll or anything else off the menu. The taste was fairly good, but the execution and final appearance of the sushi was not as fine-tuned as other places I've been to.

Everything tasted very fresh. The other cool thing about about the rotation system is that you can monitor how much you spend, as different color dishes mean differest cost. With the same token it can get pricey if you pick a couple of the expensive items and you are a big eater.

Only negatives are: large crowds on Friday nights, and no liquor other than sake is serve.

PS: You can park in the garage for free. Early reservation is recommended during busy hours.

Matsuri Japanese Restaurant

1105 S Charles St
Baltimore, MD 21230
(410) 752-8561

I first bumped into Matsuri's sushi at an event at the Hilton in Baltimore (NAFT). I fell in love and I had to have it again.
The lady serving at the time, thought I had gone crazy, I even gave her a hug and said the best sushi I have tried outside of Japan!!
I am not kidding!!
Other than the freshness of the fish, the number one important ingredient is rice and Matsuri's rice is phenomenal.
So I finally made it back to Matsuri, located in a very happening area of Baltimore (Federal Hill). Tons to do within walking distance.
The place reminds you of a little sushi bar in Tokyo, the tv playing Japanese cooking shows, all they need is Kareoke right there and there!
The service is delighfull and if you sit at the bar, as I often do (just to admire the art of sushi making) the chefs are super friendly.
The food super fresh just like a high end sushi bar in Japan and possibly even better (yes I just said that).
They have cooked food as well, like teriyaki and even soups, their menu can fulfill almost any appetite, including non sushi lovers.
Bill Tien, (owner) is really a phenomenal guy! I am kinda glad they do not have Kareoke, because if they did they would have to kick me out every night.

Don Gallo Peruvian Restaurant

2728 North Mall Drive, Suite 117
Virginia Beach, VA 23452
757) 431-0005

Category: Latin American

I have learned that there are two types of ethnic restaurants.
The ones where the general masses of americans eat, and the one that mostly the people of the origin of the restaurant eat.
Authenticity doesn't to the customer you are trying to cater, but relates to the proveniance of the food style itself.
If the food is truly authentic the followers will be mostly people that miss their home cooking.
With that said...and I am not Peruvian, I found this place thru Yelp and decided to give it a try.
The parking was extremely easy. The people, true Peruvians, the customers 90% latinos, wich speaks for itself.
Having travelled in latin america most of my life and having Peruvian friends has blessed me with great latin food. And this place blesses the Virginia beach area with some truly authentic Peruvian delicacies.
The lomo saltado is like the country's national dish...this one was delicious. I did not try the grilled chicken, but as other reviews it is on the expensive side, specially since as a Washingtonian/ Baltimorean it goes for less around me.
They even have Chica morada, wich is considered the Peruvian table wine (except is not alcoholic).
The place is clean and service was outstanding and fast.
When you are craving true Peruvian, this is the place to go to in VA beach!

Roxy Delicatessen

1565 Broadway
New York, NY 10036
(212) 921-3333

Come in hungry!! 'Cause the sandwiches here are HUGE! Probably the biggest sandwiches I have seen in NYC ( I almost feel like I am in Vegas). I have been to plenty delis in the city and this place beats them all. Generally packed due to its famous name and location, but not to worry, usually lines go pretty fast. The pastrami sandwich is to die for, with what it appears to be as much meat as a small calf. Freshly sliced right there in front of your eyes. But wait...when you think they only thing you are getting is meat, think again, the flavors go hand in hand with what made this place famous. I usually get a half sandwich or a full one to eat the rest later. The prices seem absorbitant at first, but honestly for what you get (size and flavor) and the locations (next to Times Square) in my mind you are getting a deal!!

Go Sushi IV

3 Greenwich Avenue
New York, NY 10014
(212) 366-9272

Who said you cannot have a wonderful healthy lunch that includes sushi as fast as you can have MacDonalds??
Well for those non- believers Go sushi has fresh to go sushi already prepared for you, and if your little heart desires something else, you can always order a bento box that will be prepared in a wink of the eyes.
The selection here is amazing, and the prices affordable compared to other sushi places in NYC (are we kidding). Noodle soups, sushi, tempura, and an array of hot Japanese entrees are available in the menu.
This place is great for lunch or even for a quick dinner. The place is extremely clean and it has a coffee shop type feel.
Honestly if I must choose for the MacDonalds around the corner and Go Sushi, it is an obvious choice to go with the cleaner and tastier choice, unless you are craving a generic burger.

Serendipity 3

225 E 60th St
New York, NY 10022
(212) 838-3531

The original location is just a dream come true to a child. The ambiance is fairy tale like big chandelier, elegant yet relaxed. Like the movie Alice of Wonderland...sort of. This location has two floors and it sure packs tons of people. Expect a wait, not just because of the being a famous stablisment by name but for the great variety. I must say one of the best ice cream parlors I ever been to (yes in my entire life!). Every flavor is a piece of heaven, not too overly sugary and flavored just right. The prices are a little high, but you are not only paying for ice cream you are paying for history (well kinda) Definitively a great little place to celebrate a child's birthday!

The Vegetable Garden

11618 Rockville Pike
Rockville, MD 20852
(301) 468-9301

This place is a true heaven to any vegetarian and an eye opener to a carnivour that is willing to try something new.
Basically a Chinese food restaurant with a vegetarian twist.
I have brought the most picky eaters at the veggie garden and all have always enjoyed the experience.
Some basted in denial when they were told the beef was not real meat.
Food is well prepared and it taste just like regular chinese food.
Not just good to your palate but also good to your the heart.
The places is always packed for lunch time, the service friendly and promp.

Restaurante El Trovador

318 S Broadway
Baltimore, MD 21231
(410) 276-6200

If you want authentic Latin American, please notice I did not say Mexican, cuisine, El trovador will take you into Latin America and back to B-More for a delicious authentic meal.
Everything is home made, from the salsa to the tortillitas that are served as a snack.
I have brought Mexican food lovers here and this place has opened up their eyes to the viariate of food within the hispanic culture.
Moderately leaning toward the Salvadonean cuisine, this place will not only entertain your palate with the real deal, such as home made pupusas for a buck to fresh home made sopa de rez or sopa de mariscos, beef stew or seafood soup, wich are extremely popular choices within the latinos that frequesnt this place.
The margaritas will knock you on the floor, a variaty of latin beers are available and so is home made white or red sangria.
This is the place I take my parents when they are in town and my mom and dad start craving a sopa!!
Soup and beer ...who would have known.

The Prime Rib- Baltimore

- Baltimore 1101 North Calvert StreetBaltimore, MD 21202

This place is hard to find, so unless you ask, find yourself looking around for a while. I even stopped to ask a police officer for directions and he did not know where it was....umm hasn't this place been here since the begining of time?
Once you find the place you better splurge on the valet, because finding parking in this neigborhood is not easy and if you do, make sure you lock up your car real good.
This place is dark and still set in a very 1980s mob look...the decour left you asking for more with their shiny black chair sets and bronze toned decours....it screemed 80s fab from many different directions......one comment "they need and HGTV intervention" The place was mobbed (God knows why) and the wine bar area was extremely too small for all the hussle and bussle that was going on. Can we say overbooked? We waited a good hour plus to be sat. Gladly there was a real piano player accompanied by a bass guy playing soft jazz. Finally, we were sat next to the musicians....maybe a tad too close.
We ordered a shrimp cocktail appetizer, that brought us 5 robust shrimps with canned cocktail sause for a wopping $21. Next we moved on to the house specialty, the prime rib (hence the name)....that came extremely too rare (and I like rare) cold and thick.....not a good combo to have a rare cold chunk of meat the size of a 7-11 big gulp, if I may add. My partner had what appear to be a lovely steak wich she soon declared as too fatty....need I say more? The desserts were too forgettable...in fact its been a few hours and I have forgotten what we had...
Service was borderline forgetfull, since we had to ask several other waiters for things instead of our "official " waiter who became MIA for a good 45 minute spree.

Overall this place was overprize, the food was not up to par with all the talk in town about this "pretigious" steak parlor. For starter I would fire the chef and I would get a remodeling going to get rid of that low tiled ceiling....Honestly, I would not set foot here again...not even for a free dinner!

Rating = -10 and there is nothing saving it.

El Cholo

1025 Wilshire Boulevard
Santa Monica, CA 90401
(310) 899-1106

This place offers authentic Mexican fare with a kick ass name. The building resembles an old Mexican Finca (farm). The interior is ample with a nice interior garden.
I truly enjoyed my food, eventhough I was immensely jet lagged.
They offer an array of truly Mexican dishes, if you feel like being brave. The drinks are amazingly strong. I would recommend this place for a group outing with friends that like to drink.
